What’s in a Name?
It’s difficult to invite your friends to see a show called Cock. My tactic was to ask my culturally-minded buddies what they were up to on Friday night, tell them I had plans to see a play, and pique their interests before I revealed the actual name. While I was able to convince them to join me, the name did cause some startled exclamations every time.
And it’s a shame, really, because Cock, both on page and in its current iteration at Manbites Dog Theater in Durham, is actually a much lovelier, much subtler play than its provocative title would suggest. The play centers on John, a man who is confused to soon fall in love with a woman shortly following a rash breakup with his longtime boyfriend. Worse words than the title come to mind for the perpetually indecisive protagonist, but it’s fascinating to watch both of his lovers grapple with their feelings for and frustrations with him while he himself confronts their pressure to understand what – and who – he is.
Under John Storer’s direction, the play is staged like a relentless cockfight, with the actors rapidly transitioning between scenes at the sounding of a ringside bell. The effect is exhilarating and ultimately exhausting as the show runs the gamut of emotional manipulation, all while making some very smart – and often funny – observations about relationships, sexuality, and identity. It was worth making my friends blush at the invitation.
Cock is now playing at Manbites Dog Theater and closes October 19. Click here for more information.
